Who’s behind Salvage Style, and what you’ll find at the shop

Founded by former magazine editor and stylist Amy Hughes in 2013, Salvage Style specializes in vintage furniture and accents that create interiors with personality. Amy believes home is an expression of its inhabitants—their travels, their loves, and their history. It’s where possessions tell a story. Nothing is too precious, and patina is valued over the pristine. When Amy’s not in the shop, she’s on the road sourcing primitive pine farm tables, Danish mid-century credenzas, Italian art glass lighting, and tribal hand-knotted rugs—plus myriad other gems—from flea markets, antiques shows, and auctions. She brings in new inventory weekly, and sets prices at or below market value to keep her stock fresh and accessible. In 2017, after outgrowing her small storefront in Maplewood Village proper, Amy crossed the railroad tracks, snagging a sprawling, light-filled former auto garage-turned-showroom, and founded the Maplewood Mercantile cooperative for herself and other like-minded women-owned retailers. The Mercantile, where Salvage Style now resides, has become a community gathering place and destination design hub, where families shop together for meaningful gifts; friends sift through second-hand treasures; day-trippers from NYC visit by train for suburban bargains; and designers, set decorators, and stylists flock for hard-to-find period pieces.
